course of erection for them the traffic in Queen's Road

will diminish rather than increase.

I am, however, in full sympathy

with the desire that has been expressed for a clock that

will be visible from the harbour and from all the higher

levels of the City of Victoria. It was proposed in Sir

Henry Blake's Despatch referred to above to put up such a

clock on a tower to be erected at the shore-end of Blake

Pier. The cost of the project which was to include waiting

rooms,

lavatories and quarters for an attendant at the

base of the Tower and a roof over the pier itself was

estimated at $102,500. Funds have not hitherto been avail-

-able to carry out this project which was approved in Mr.......

Chamberlain's telegram of the 10th. July, 1901. I do not

O altogether regret this as a tall tower at the end of a very

short pier with a cluster of low buildings round it and

high buildings close behind it does not commend itself

much to me as an architectural feature.

I think it better that the Tower

should form part of the New Post Office building now in

course of erection on the sea front. I have accordingly

had a design prepared for a Tower to be added to that

building
